Unraveled: The Long Island Serial Killer

Image
I reviewed Billy Jensen's book, Chase Darkness with Me , on the blog back in 2019, and I'm also a fan of the podcast he co-hosts with Paul Holes, Jensen & Holes: The Murder Squad . Now Jensen has a new project, Unraveled: The Long Island Serial Killer , which is available in podcast form and as a special on Discovery+. Unraveled  is described as "a search for answers in one of the biggest murder mysteries in American history," and Jensen and his co-host, Alexis Linkletter, tell the story of an unsolved case involving 11 murdered women and a corrupt police chief. This case is also the subject of the 2020 Netflix film "Lost Girls," and if you liked that, you'll definitely want to check out Unraveled . You can find Unraveled wherever you listen to podcasts or watch it on Discovery+ (which is a great streaming service, by the way...I'm doing a free trial right now, and I'm loving all the true crime and paranormal stuff they have to offer). I high

HBO's I'll Be Gone in the Dark

Michelle McNamara's I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer  is the best true crime book I've ever read (and I've read a lot of them), so of course I was excited about HBO's six-part documentary series, which concluded last Sunday. I'll Be Gone in the Dark  is thrilling, unsettling, and heartbreaking and really does the book (and Michelle) justice. If you're a fan of true crime at all (and I'll assume you are if you're reading this blog), do yourself a favor and check it out. You can find out more about the series here (and if you're not an HBO subscriber, you can sign up for a free trial of HBO Max and watch it that way): HBO: I'll Be Gone in the Dark (Also, you can read my review of the book here:  Book Spotlight: I'll Be Gone in the Dark .)

Stay Home and Read Never Trust an Angel for Free!

Looking for something fun to read while you avoid crowds? Keep your mind off all the bad news with Never Trust an Angel and Other Plays! It'll be free on Amazon through March 16th, and I hope you have as much reading it as I did writing it. I don't usually post about my books on this blog, but Jeffrey Dahmer is a character in Never Trust an Angel, so I thought my fellow true crime buffs might be interested. Here's what it's about: Satan is sure that his overachieving son will run Hell someday, but his wife has a secret that may change everything. Jesus wants to quit his job to start a Christian metal band, and now it's up to God to find a new Messiah...but the person he has in mind doesn't want the job. Will God be able to find a suitable Messiah? Will Christian metal be as terrible as it sounds, or will Jesus take the music business by storm? Will Satan and Angel's relationship survive Angel's betrayal? You'll find answers to these questions a

Book Spotlight: The Phantom Prince: My Life with Ted Bundy by Elizabeth Kendall

I've been wanting to read Elizabeth Kendall's The Phantom Prince: My Life with Ted Bundy  for years, so when it was re-released a few months ago, I had to buy it. The book was originally published in 1981, and the updated and expanded 2020 edition includes a new introduction and afterward by Kendall as well as a contribution from her daughter, Molly, who was three years old when her mother began a relationship with Ted. Kendall met Bundy at Seattle's Sandpiper Tavern in October 1969 and embarked on a six-year relationship with him. During their relationship, she became suspicious of him and worried that he might be the man police were looking for in connection with murders in Washington and Utah. She went to the police with her suspicions but felt conflicted and guilty about it, and though the police assured her that Bundy wasn't the man they were looking for, it wasn't enough to quell her fears. The Phantom Prince is a fascinating story about what happens when

Book Spotlight: Disgraceland by Jake Brennan

As someone who's interested in both true crime and music, I was pretty sure I'd enjoy Jake Brennan's Disgraceland: Musicians Getting Away with Murder and Behaving Very Badly , and it did not disappoint! In this book, Brennan tells some fascinating stories about Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Axl Rose, Chuck Berry, and more, and his writing style really pulled me into the story and made me feel like I was there, witnessing the events in person. I enjoyed the whole book, but the most interesting chapter was the one about Jerry Lee Lewis. Of course I knew about Jerry Lee marrying his 13-year-old cousin, but I had no idea that he possibly murdered one of his other wives and got away with it or that he rammed his car into the gates of Graceland one night, threatening to assassinate Elvis. The Sid Vicious chapter was also really interesting...before I read Disgraceland , all I knew about him was that he was in the Sex Pistols and killed his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen. I didn

In Bed with Nick and Megan: Murder with Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark

I just discovered that the delightful and hilarious Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally have a podcast, In Bed with Nick and Megan , and was excited to find out that they welcomed My Favorite Murder 's Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark into their bed on the January 5th episode. I thought my fellow Murderinos might be interested in listening to it, so of course I had to share the link here. Enjoy! 😃 Murder with Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark

Book Spotlight: Stay Sexy and Don't Get Murdered by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark

Image
I started listening to My Favorite Murder  a few months ago and immediately became obsessed with it, so of course I had to buy Stay Sexy and Don't Get Murdered , which is a dual memoir by the podcast's amazing hosts. Karen and Georgia talk about their successes, therapists, true crime obsessions, and things they've learned from their mistakes, and they give great advice about how to "fuck politeness," avoid joining a cult, be a latchkey kid, and more. If you love My Favorite Murder  as much as I do, you've got to read this book...you'll learn a lot about Karen and Georgia and learn some valuable life lessons in the process. My rating: 8.5/10 Visit  myfavoritemurder.com  to listen to the podcast, join the Fan Cult (the only kind of cult you should join), or buy merchandise that will make you the envy of your fellow Murderinos.
